45 Years of Art of Living: A Nation Celebrates, A World Reflects
When 100,000 people and 600 dignitaries travel from 30 countries for one person’s birthday, something larger is being said. In May 2026, Bengaluru hosted a gathering that was equal parts celebration and testimony. Forty-five years of Art of Living. Seventy years of Gurudev’s life. And a demonstration, visible to anyone present, of what one person’s vision can set in motion.

600 Dignitaries Across Every Sphere of Public Life
Chief ministers, governors, Union Cabinet ministers, international parliamentarians, India’s foremost entertainers, and leading business figures, including Mukesh Ambani and Rajinikanth, were among those present.
India Post Commemorative Stamp
Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan joined Gurudev to officially release a special commemorative stamp for the Art of Living. A quiet but lasting mark in India’s national record.
In 1981, Gurudev emerged from ten days of silence in a small village in South India. He came out with a practice, a purpose, and a conviction: that a stress-free, violence-free world is not a utopia. It is a practical possibility. It begins with the individual.
The gathering in Bengaluru was the world sending warm wishes back.
Among the 600 dignitaries were chief ministers from Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, and Manipur. Nine state governors attended. Five Union Cabinet ministers were present, along with an international delegation spanning South Africa, Japan, Sri Lanka, and Europe.
Rajinikanth, Jackie Shroff, and Lara Dutta joined the celebration, all artists who have spoken openly about their own journeys with the Art of Living. So did industrialists including Mukesh Ambani and Ashok Hinduja.
India Post’s commemorative stamp carried its own significance. Stamps mark what a nation chooses to remember. That the Vice President of India stood beside Gurudev to mark the occasion was a recognition that 45 years of Art of Living service belongs to India’s story. The mental health programs. The rural communities. The prison rehabilitation. The inner lives of hundreds of millions of people touched by Sudarshan Kriya, or SKY Breath Meditation.
Numbers tell part of the story. 100,000 gathered. 600 dignitaries. 30 countries. 45 years.
Since 1981, Art of Living has grown into a global movement with 40,000 teachers active across 182 countries and more than one million volunteers worldwide. It has reached over 800 million people. It has restored 70 rivers in India. It has brought trauma relief to returning veterans, run rehabilitation programs in prisons across the world, and worked through some of the most intractable conflicts of our time, from the Colombian Civil War to the Ayodhya dispute.
Spiritual teaching is not separate from humanitarian service. It is not separate from cultural renewal or the work of peace. But it is the source of all of it.
Forty-five years in, with 100,000 people gathered in Bengaluru, that argument no longer needs to be made. It is being lived, and spread, by a growing community.
Woven into the celebration was Leaders Circle, a series of reflective dialogues that may prove among its most enduring contributions.
This was not a conventional conference. No policy statements. No keynote speeches behind podiums. Instead, leaders from across public life gathered to ask harder questions: What does it mean to lead with integrity? How do you serve under pressure? Where does outer action come from?
Speakers included Sriram Panchu, one of India’s most respected mediators. Deepak Parekh, a figure of unimpeachable standing in Indian finance. Jaya Row, a Vedanta teacher with decades of experience bridging ancient wisdom and contemporary life. Rt. Rev. Stephen Fernandes and Gensei Ito brought perspectives from Christian and Buddhist contemplative traditions. Together they ranged across courage in public life, responsible technology, youth leadership, mental health, and the resurgence of ancient wisdom in a modern world.
The thread running through all of it was the one Gurudev has taught since 1981, that lasting change in the world begins with change within the person.
Here is a partial list of those in attendance. Due to the length of the list, we cannot mention everyone by name, though we value the words and warm wishes shared by all.
Union Cabinet Ministers
Ministers of State
